My Most Asked Question...

I absolutely LOVE receiving emails from you all, from simple things like "What font is that you use?" to "I just wanted to say i absolutely love reading your blog & you have inspired me to start my own so thank you" and then there's the "I'm an NW20, which nude lipstick would you recommend? Or even your favourite?"

I enjoy answering these, as i feel i can really help & it makes me happy to think I've given any advice i may have, whether it's all that useful or not.

However, there is one question which is really starting to grind on me.

"How did you get so many followers?"

I know that some of you reading this may have asked this question, and it's not like i will instantly hate you if you have, I just really don't like answering this question.
Firstly because it makes me sad that some girls might think that blogging is only fun if you have lots of followers. This really isn't the case. Blogging, for me anyway, is a hobby. It's just something i like to write about, a way to wind down & to give some advice to those who may want some.
Everyone starts a blog with no followers, i did also.
I didn't ever post a link to my blog in a comment on someone else's blog post, i never emailed people in their hundreds.
I just wrote.
I wasn't all that familiar with followers when i first started my blog, peoples little faces kept appearing at the side, it took me a while to realise these were the people who wanted to see when I'd posted something new.
If you want to gain more followers through self promotion, that's great, there is absolutely nothing stopping you, but are you really going to feel as much pride & satisfaction as you would if you didn't, and these people found your blog on their own, loved it & chose to follow you?

I honestly do not know how i have so many amazing followers, but i value and appreciate every single one. I love all the feedback & i'm blown away with the generosity of some of you.
I totally understand that some of you don't like writing with the feeling nobody is listening to you or reading what you have to say, but is that why you started your blog? I would rather have a handful of loyal followers than 500 people i asked to check out my blog or who followed me because of a giveaway.

Hopefully, every single one of you like to read what i have to say. Obviously, i never get 2700 comments on every post, but i certainly wouldn't expect that. Some people might be following purely for the Lush reviews, some for the FOTD's, some just for lipstick help...there will loads of different reasons, but that's just the fun of it. We're all very different, and people will your follow your blog for different reasons. Hey, i might even have some pervy middle aged man called Baldwin following my blog who likes my ears & i would never know haha (kinda creepy...)

If you ask this question in the form of some advice, just be yourself, enjoy what you're writing & appreciate every follower you have..even if you only have 3, this doesnt mean you are a failure. Blogging is not about failing and winning & it's not a popularity contest. These 3 people like to see what you write, even if they don't comment, so don't make them feel worthless by complaining of only having 3 followers. *sob* That is honestly, the only advice i can give you.

I hope nobody takes offense to this blogpost, i just felt i needed to address the issue as my inbox is brimming with unanswered emails all asking the same question. So i'm resolving this in one foul swoop.
Like i said, if you think more followers would make you happy, and you're quite happy asking people to give you shoutouts, then do that. There's no right or wrong way, and people gain happiness through different things. I'm just happy i have a place to express a passion in my life & i find it really enjoyable :)

  2. Hi, My Name is Baldwin and I like your ears...LOL

That was hilarious! I started blogging and I never self-promoted and I didn't want to hold a contest just so that my number shoots up a couple hundred because I'm giving away "Free stuff". I think I've earned a good loyal following base and I would be still blogging if I had 3 followers :D

  3. @Cheryl - Hahah. I just laughed out loud. That is so great to hear & i bet you feel extra proud for it! Baldwin could be reading this... :O x

  4. This needed to be said zobo! everyone seems to be obsessed with numbers of followers these days! nat cool!
But i do wish there was a man called Baldwin who liked my ears! jealous! xxx

  5. I so agree with you!
I hate it when people moan over how many followers they have - It's just boring.
I've never self promoted my blog & I think i have a lovely amount of followers and i love them all!
Blogging is not about the followers and its annoying when people think its just about that! Grr
    glad you've done this post

  6. I totally agree with your point of view!
I have 26 followers and i'm so proud, because I didn't ask no one of them to follow me. They just do it because they like my blog! This is a great feeling. And I've planed on doing a giveaway, BUT without the "you must be a follower"-part. Because I don't want nobody to follow me, just to get something for free, like you said. I just do it for fun and because I'm happy when others are happy!
    Love your post!

  7. Agreed,Its the sly self promo I dont like, like iv given u an award,oh that seems nice, until I click the page and theres a gazillion rules underneath saying you have to link other ppl pages lol,I started my blog because I love to write, and I enjoy it and maybe so I could find me a Baldwin or a Bob,that was it,nothing elese lol.x

  8. Well said sweetie.
I just adore the fact that I can write and ramble about things that give me pleasure, and even if just a handful of people read it, then that's just great.
I don't think the amount of followers is an instant reflection on one's blog (not taking anything away from your blog cos we know it's fabulous) but it's sad when it becomes a popularity contest in regards to followers.
I like my blog as it's a space for my own expression and if people chose to join me there, then that makes me very happy. But like u said, I'd rather have 200 loyal followers that geninely read and enjoy my ramblings, than 500 followers there for the free stuff. Which I, unfortunately, think I have encountered... :(

  9. I completely agree with you. I hate getting comments that say: I love your blog! I'll follow you.. if you follow me.

I honestly never even click their link. I may not have a lot of followers, but I'd rather have people following my blog because they honestly like my blog.

  10. So very true, there is nothing more annoying than clicking on a blog that has you must add us and tell other people to and etc. It honestly makes me want to click out of their page. But 5 kudos for this blog, very nice. =)

  11. Hahahaha! I actually just lol'd at the idea of ear-loving Baldwin!
I also have a very loyal follower who loves to post links to chinese porn sites in my comments, gotta' love em! ;)

  12. i agree! it's so annoying when people comment a post asking to be followed, i only have 44 followers but all except from you(i feel bad for emailing you, sorry) have followed me through choice. i love your blog and you deserve all of your followers! :D,X

  13. Great post, I started much in the same way - passionate about my topic and and urge to share my opinion with the world. I think it's very obvious when people are only out for self promotion, they fool no one. Having said that, I don't think all self promotion is evil but it should certainly be balances with an anthusiasm and cretaive drive with which to run the blog, those who don't have this fizzle out very quickly. Well done on your frank and honest thoughts ♥

  14. Great post. I also get a lot of emails asking how to get more followers and how to get "popular".

I started out posting every day and putting soo much effort in and I never once got advice from anyone. I just used my common sense and people seemed to like what I wrote about.

I think people want hundreds of followers overnight without putting effort into the content and layout of their blogs which just doesn't make sense.

I'm always on the hunt for new blogs and new things to read about and if I like it I will always 'follow'. That's just how it works! There are no shortcuts.

  15. This was a lovely post :)

I've only just started out blogging (and I DO have 3 followers! yayy :D) but I still get super excited when I see the little green man thing at the top of the home page :)

Your blog is lovely and honest - that'll probably be the reason why you have so many of us!!

    Love Laura x

  16. Completely agree with this petal... before you helped me out I only had 7 (wonderful) followers - but having a lot more now really hasn't changed how much I enjoy blogging. It's not about the number, it's about having fun and expressing yourself. I have a second blog (on a different profile) with a whole 1 follower (my mom!!) and I love that one (about my travels) as much as my makeup one!!

This really needed to be said... hopefully people will relax about followers and just blog for fun :) xx

  19. Great post Zoe, very well written and I totally agree with everything you said.

I get a few emails asking how to gain followers and I just tell them I don't know... because truth is, I really don't. I just love having my own little space to ramble, a place that is mine all mine.

I am appreciative of all of my followers, and I'm grateful that people choose to follow me... but it's not the be all and end all of blogging.

    xx

  20. Haha 'peoples little faces kept appearing at the side'.

This whole 'followers' race is so old and so stupid, i totally agree that its better to have followers who love your blog, rather than follow for the sake of it.

I dont think i've ever commented on your blog but i been a long time follower (i just discovered your youtube which somehow passed me by previously!) I love the layout of your blog, that your posts are always well written and structured as well as your photography which is beautiful.

  21. Great post, I remember 1st landing on your page, and I stayed on it for a like an hour, because I really liked your style of writing, but also your pictures are amazing! LOL at old men crushing on you!! haahah..

But I remember when I started blogging for months I have like 2 followers, and I still loved doing it. I don't know how I started getting more followers, but I like how every one of them found my page and decided to follow. Thats why I haven't done any giveaways because I wouldn't want +200 people just following me for a prize, but not bothering to read or ever come back afterwards, you know?

    Anyway love your blog! oxxoxox

  22. Excellent post! Well said. I'm a new follower and new blogger and your right its not all about how many people are following you, for me its almost like a diary which I can look back at in years to come! I'm honoured that 5 people follow me!

  27. Great post lovely! This is why I love your blog, and you! I have held contests, for big milestones, but that's because I wanted to give something back. The only thing I ever, ever promote is my crafting work, because you know, that's my little side project! But for me blogging is like you say, a fun project that I do in my spare time, and to be honest I'm totally amazed anyone wants to follow me. I love all my followers, but the number isn't important. It's just about having fun and being honest.

lately i feel like i've become number-obsessed, like all i care about is how many followers i have & this really reassured me that blogging is supposed to be fun & it's not about popularity. thank you soo much for that!
i love your honesty! keep on blogging doll :)

  30. Love this! You deserve every follower you have. You're amazing and we love you!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I totally agree with everything you've said.

I'll admit that when I started blogging and saw that people had 100 followers I was amazed by it, not because I wondered how they got so many, just that I suppose there were that many people out there interested in beauty blogs.

I have been blogging since August and have just recently hit my 100 followers mark and I was really chuffed about it, it pisses me off when you see people leaving random "I love your blog" comments with a link to their blog at the end of it. If I want to see your blog, I'll click your name?

I'm not surprised that you have so many followers, your blog is brilliant (check my link under the comment if you want to follow ;) )but people seem to forget that every blog starts with no followers, you don't get a million people following you overnight.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't think that having followers is about a "popularity contest" I think it's about the desire to have people intersted in what you're saying. Having contests and giveaways is promoting your blog because you KNOW people would be interested in what you have to say if only they knew about your blog.

    ReplyDelete
  33. That's some good advice! =] Every time i want to write a blog and i'd tell my boyfriend he'll say so only 3 people can read your blog? Then he laughs.. but he's just kidding lol Blogging is fun and it lets me vent about my day so that's why i do it. =]

  34. so well said :)

At the time I have three followers, and guess what? I'm honored that even three people wanted to read what I wrote! haha, I enjoy blogging, and like you said, it's a fun hobby.

  35. This was a lovely post Zoe(:
I feel exactly the same way, i follow loads of blogs that have only a few followers and i love them, so you are totally right, it is quality not quantity <3

  36. I couldn't agree with more! You have also inspired me (like many others) to start a blog. But I only blog because I think it's fun not because I want a million followers. You rock. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Great post as usual! I get asked this quite a bit as well. My response is always the same: Keep on posting and your 'readers' will find you and your blog will grow. I don't mind a bit of self-promotion as long as your doing it as part of the conversation and commenting for real. I am not in favor of people who just leave random comments on everyone's blogs saying, come follow me or those who say, I've followed you so you should come and follow me.

Blogging isn't a popularity contest after all.

  38. i think it's fair to say you're the QUEEN of blogging, and to be honest, people shouldn't need to ask the question 'how did you get so many followers' isn't it obvious?
    1)you're blog is amazing
2)you tell the truth about products and actually show us how they look (keep up the good work)
3)its commical and you just get addicted to reading, my boyfriend and my mother have heard all about this blog and like many others you were my inspiration to start blogging, because i loved how it felt knowing all these makeup tips and what looks good and i wanted people to feel the same through my blog.

if people want followers then i think the best advice is to use it as a diary not employment.

  39. I hate when people moan about how others having other more followers then them. Is it really that important? Yes, it's nice to have them but like you said it's better to have 500 loyals then 3894573485 who just sub for free stuff. Or in the hope you're going to follow back or something. :/ This whole blogging thing is getting so out of hand atm. <3

  59. I know this is quite an old post, but I wanted to comment as it made me feel better :) I found your blog via youtube via mrs thrifty (who mentioned your perchant for coral - glad its not just me!! although I'm verging onto peach slightly too! anywya digression) I was started to feel a little bit sad about the fact I'm blogging to myself, but yourpost made me realise that wasn't why I began. I began blogging recently to do something with all those little pics of projects or of my dog of charity shop finds rather than just sticking them on facebook and to give them a bit of a story. Its like a littel diary, and if 1 or 2 or more people like to be nosy too then thats great but as you said its a hobby and I've found the enjoyment of writing lost wehn I left university.
    Thanks :)

ps love your haul videos esp primark ones although they do make me want to go shopping - funny how you never find what someone else has bought though lol

  60. Hey! I'm a brand new blogger... and this was such a nice piece to read :) It's kind of put my mind to ease about it all, so thank you!It doesn't really matter how many people read what I'm writing about (although it is nice to know that a few people are nosey enough to have a peek sometimes!) It's something for me to do and enjoy - so wish me luck with it! :)

  61. Just stumbled across this post whilst stalking your blog (kind of like Baldwin probably is right now) and am so glad you wrote this. When I first started blogging I worried that no-one would follow, and when they did I was just very grateful, it's good to remind people to appreciate their followers.

I have around 500 followers at the moment and people are already starting to ask me the 'how do you do it' question.. I find it such an awkward question to answer because a) there are much bigger blogs out there than mine, I'm tiny compared to others, b) I have no idea why people read what I write, I'm just happy that they do and c) it can be a bit offensive that people feel like they have to ask you why people like you.

In summary.. good post, you deserve every single follower :)

I really didnt want veiws to be a big part of my blog.. but, when youve been bloging for the same amount of time as someone else and they have like.. tripple the ammount of veiws/followers it kinda hurts :(
I never seem to get many veiws, and im not sure why.. i just write and hope that people like to read. Maybe they dont? I still dont make a HUGE fuss over how many veiws i have. And at the moment i havnt got any followers that im not - face to face - friends with, but, coming from someone who isnt very popular, having followers is something that i would definatly appreciate! :P
i probably come accross as a selfish idiot now, but it is quite hard to explain.. Ill be very very thankfull if i do become as succesful as you (without premoting myself)

  64. Hi Zoe. I agree with your post that our blogs should be content focused, writing for the love of writing and not be follower based. However, my website is not on blogger or Wordpress so if someone leaves a comment and doesn't put a link to their website I can't reply to them personally. I like to visit other people's blogs and comment on theirs so in that respect I don't mind people putting a link. What I don't like is people overly promoting themselves and only writing a basic big standard comment like "nice shoes! Let's follow each other!" or "check out my site!!!" could these people be less genuine?!! In the long run it will just take those people so much longer to get true, devoted readers...I know it puts me off and there's not way I'd visit their site! Anyway, just my little thoughts.... I love your site. When I read your posts I laugh out loud and think wow its so nice to hear someone being so honest and not giving a fig what people think! I literally spent about 2 hours last night reading through your old posts! I'm now a devoted follower! :)
