Reviewing January 2022 Zoella Book Club: Wahala by Nikki May

A story about three thirty-something women of mixed Nigerian and English heritage Ronke, Simi and Boo. Keep reading to find the team’s reviews on this razor-sharp debut from a brilliant new voice!

Dubbed the hottest debut of 2022, Wahala certainly gave us something to smile about this January.

The draft poured out of Nikki May in six months and when you get to know the characters, you’ll understand why.

At the core of the book is a story about three thirty-something women of mixed Nigerian and English heritage Ronke, Simi and Boo. Ronke wants the happy ever after with a man as perfect as her late father. Boo has everything Ronke wants – the 5-year-old daughter, the kind husband, the dream house – but she’s unfulfilled and plagued by guilt. Then there’s Simi, she’s got an amazing job and an even more amazing wardrobe but she’s crippled by imposter syndrome and her husband thinks they’re trying for a baby but she’s still on birth control…

Then the glamorous Isobel, an old friend of Simi’s, explodes onto the scene like a wrecking ball. At first, it seems she’s got everyone’s best interests at heart, she goes running with Boo, she gets Simi an interview in Shanghai but her real motive for infiltrating this friendship group and causing Wahala (which means trouble in Yoruba) propels the narrative all the way to the explosive final chapters.

Keep reading to find the team’s reviews on this razor-sharp debut from a brilliant new voice!

The Synopsis:

Ronke, Simi, Boo are three mixed-race friends living in London. They have the gift of two cultures, Nigerian and English. Not all of them choose to see it that way.
Everyday racism has never held them back, but now in their thirties, they question their future. Ronke wants a husband (he must be Nigerian); Boo enjoys (correction: endures) stay-at-home motherhood; while Simi, full of fashion career dreams, rolls her eyes as her boss refers to her urban vibe yet again.

When Isobel, a lethally glamorous friend from their past arrives in town, she is determined to fix their futures for them. Cracks in their friendship begin to appear, and it is soon obvious Isobel is not sorting but wrecking. When she is driven to a terrible act, the women are forced to reckon with a crime in their past that may just have repeated itself.

Explosive, hilarious and wildly entertaining, this razor-sharp tale of love, race and family will have you laughing, crying and gasping in horror. Fearlessly political about class, colourism and clothes, the spellbinding Wahala is for anyone who has ever cherished friendship, in all its forms.

Why Wordle is the Banana Bread of 22′ & Other Brain Teaser Games to Play ASAP!

In the name of preventing our ageing brains from decomposing quicker than a Primark bag in a storm, we’ve discovered a few word-based games you can play whilst you countdown the hours until Christmas Wordle morning.

What do the words knoll, favor and proxy all have in common? They’ve all caused outrage in the Wordleverse, that’s what.

If you haven’t heard of Wordle, start playing it here and prepare for it to rule your very existence and be the bane of it too. Seriously, we don’t remember life BW (before Worldle), nor do we want to. It’s basically the banana bread of 2022.

The simple five-letter word game will have a hold on you stronger than Harry Styles. One minute you’ll be looking over someone’s shoulder as they punch in various 5 letter words to Tetris-like blocks thinking that’ll never be me, next minute you’re waiting up till midnight to be one of the first to discover today’s word, telling your boyfriend to (actual quote) ‘Wordle more quietly’ and ‘GIVE ME SPACE’ as he keeps asking what line you’re on.

The viral daily word game created by software engineer Josh Wardle can be played through your web browser. The rules are simple, you have six tries at guessing a five-letter word. When you get a letter right and it’s in the right place, one of five tiles turns green. If you’ve got the letter right but it’s in the wrong place, it goes yellow. A grey tile means that letter is not in the word and the game will be particularly insufferable.

A Wordle comes but once a day and that’s half the fun of it. It doesn’t take up too much of your time. People often take to Twitter to bemoan a particularly controversial five letter word, sometimes using a four-letter one – favor was a bad day to be a UK Wordler – and then you do it all again the next day, punching the air when you get a word in one or vowing never to play the stupid f*cking game ever again when you get the passive-aggressive,  “phew that was close” warning.

It’s a universal lived experience we can share together each day – delighting in its simplicity and posting our pathetic little frustrated tiles on Instagram alongside cries of, “Wtf is a knoll?”

The only downside is that you only get to Wordle once a day, so in the name of preventing our ageing brains from decomposing quicker than a Primark bag in a storm or a corn puff Wotsit on the tongue, we’ve discovered a few word-based games you can play whilst you countdown the hours until Christmas Wordle morning.

Typeshift

Dubbed the modern anagram puzzle, Typeshift’s the perfect game to play in quick bursts whenever you need to unwind for a few minutes between tasks. In most anagram games, you search for new combinations within a single word, but in Typeshift, you search within three to five words stacked & scrambled up together.

Shift the columns of letters in the grid up and down until you form a word in the central row. When you’ve used all the letters once and turned all the tiles blue, you can consider yourself a linguistic genius (it’s not hyperbolic if it’s true) and enjoy the thrill of your post puzzle pick-me-up.

Unlike a traditional crossword, you can flick all the letters around until your brain spots a word – kind of like a linguistic Rubik’s cube. One you’ve solved all the words in the pack, you can move onto ‘Clue Puzzles’ to find the words that match the clues. Once you find an answer and spell it in the centre row, tap the clue it answers. If you’re right, the clue will be filled in and any letters that aren’t in the other answers will be removed from the puzzle. With over a hundred free games and a daily puzzle to complete, you’ve got hours of fun right at your fingertips.

Download it here.

Nerdle

Now this one might take longer than your usual Wordle coffee break if you’re not a fan of numbers. Nerdle gives you six chances to guess a numerical equation, using numbers 0 to 9, +, -, /, and =. If you’re more Rachel Riley than Susie Dent then Nerdle is exactly the kind of tonic you might be looking for.

Get our your calculator and trial it here.

Kitty Letter

Described as ‘Scrabble combined with Clash Royale’, Kitty Letter is a free game from the makers of popular card game Exploding Kittens. To play, you’ve got to unscramble words in the enchanted language vortex to protect yourself and your home from legions of exploding cats. Every word you find spawns magical cats that defend your home and march across the street to attack the crazy cat man who lives in a trailer. The bigger the word, the more cats you send out. Play alone or go head-to-head with friends or strangers in multiplayer mode and may the best linguist win.

Prepare your army of cats here.

Wordscapes

For fans of crosswords and anagrams, Wordscapes is the best of both worlds. With over 6,000 puzzles, you’ll have plenty of games to keep you entertained. To play, simply use your finger to connect random letters in a circle to find the hidden words and fill the crossword. Climb the levels and gradually progress to harder puzzles to challenge your brain. If you get stuck, you can tap the shuffle button or get a hint to help you.

Download the app here.

Play Four

You’re given a four-by-four crossword consisting of eight words running vertically and horizontally, with clues for each along the left-hand side. You’re scored on how many moves you make and the time it takes to complete the puzzle and there are regular modes (would recommend) and expert. Much like Wordle, you get one play per day, so use it wisely. Go forth and treat yourself.\

Give it a go here.

NY Times Spelling Bee

Another game guaranteed to get word nerds buzzing. Each daily Spelling Bee puzzle contains seven unique letters arranged in a hive shape and players need to make as many words as they can using them. The rules don’t end there though. Words must be four letters or longer and they must contain the highlighted letter in the middle of the honeycomb at least once. To make things even more challenging, ‘s’ doesn’t exist in the land of the Spelling Bee, so when it comes to plurals, you need to think outside the hive. Its only redeeming feature is you’re allowed to use letters more than once. Four letter words are worth one point each whilst longer words earn you one point per letter and every puzzle contains one pangram using every letter in the honeycomb shape. Top tip: use the shuffle function to shake up the letters so you can see the puzzle from a different angle.

Play Spelling Bee straight from your web browser via the NY Times website here.

BYRDLE

Sound familiar? There are plenty of Wordle riffs out there to play so if you find yourself addicted to the thrill of sussing out that five-letter brainteaser every day, then BYRDLE’s the word. It’s pretty much the same game, the only difference being that the daily BYRDLE is always related to chorus music. How niche. We’re not sure if a theme makes it easier or harder.

Play Byrdle here.

Taylordle

A niche version of Worlde we can get behind! Flex your Taylor Swift knowledge with 5 letter favourites from all her best songs. From Betty to Lover, Blank to Space you’ll never feel smarter as a die-hard swiftie.

Try your favourite lyrics here.

Hello Wordl

Surprise, surprise another knockoff Wordle but here’s the fun / frustrating part: you decide how many letters it is. Feeling frazzled? Go for four. Swallowed a dictionary? Go for ten. Unlike the OG, there’s no daily limit so you can have as many goes as you like. Consider it research for when your daily Wordle comes around again.

Try it here.

Daily Jumble

Un-jumble the four words to complete the comic. The circled letters in each of the answers become the jumbled answer for the game’s cartoon clue. When you solve an answer in the first 30 seconds of the game, your score for the word is multiplied by five. You can use the hint button if you get stuck but you will have to sacrifice some of your points for the privilege.

Play it here.

Word Connect

The brain-training puzzle game everyone needs on their home screen. Simply swipe the blocks to connect the letters to create new words and work your way through the levels. Praise be for games you can play one-handed.

Use the hint button to get a clue or hit the shuffle button to reorganise the letters when you need to look at it with a fresh set of eyes.

Download it here.

50 People On The Lessons They Learnt From Their Worst Heartbreak

If you’re in need of some hope, some pockets of joy and what feels like unreachable curiosity about what life is like when you finally reach the other side, we spoke to 50 people about the lessons they learnt from their worst break-up.

All-consuming and nauseating at best, traumatising at worst, it might sound dramatic, but for those who have gone through a break-up that tore their world in half, the reality of surviving what feels unsurvivable can be truly devastating. Whether the rug has been pulled from under your feet or you made a difficult decision to leave a relationship that was no longer serving you, the minutes, hours, days and months that follow can feel endlessly challenging in everything from significant calendar dates to the tiniest intricacies of your day- ordering a takeaway for one, the familiar smell of their shower gel on someone else or their favourite song on the radio all thrusting you back into the depths of it all. As the world keeps spinning and life carries on for those around you, you’re left stuck exactly where things ended, with time now being separated in your brain as simply ‘before’ and ‘after’ the end of you and them.

And whilst the anguish that comes from heartbreak can feel so isolating and unique in its destruction, it’s true that in any given moment, thousands of others are in the same throes of emotion, wondering if things will ever feel normal or okay again too.

Spoiler alert: it is survivable, and not only that, one day you will thrive and glow with newfound energy, lust for life, and all the highs and lows the universe sends your way. It certainly might not be a short or easy journey, especially if the person you lost felt as close to ‘the one’ as you thought you would ever know, but sometimes it really does take reaching the lowest point possible to rise on the other side stronger, better, and with more clarity about what you deserve from your precious time on Earth. Break-ups change us in unfathomable ways, but it’s true that what breaks us can then make us, and from rock bottom… the only way is up!

So if you’re in need of some hope, some pockets of joy and what feels like unreachable curiosity about what life is like when you finally reach the other side, we spoke to 50 people about the lessons they learnt from their worst break-up and the knowledge they took into their new chapters of love, lust and longing. Grab a cuppa, take a deep breath and know that rejection can equal redirection in the end.

  • It is never wrong to have loved someone, even if they haven’t loved you back. Love is what truly makes the world go around, and there can never be too much of it.
  • In the words of Taylor Swift herself, “she lost him but she found herself and somehow that was everything”
  • As painful as it feels when it ends, you will always overcome it and find people on the other side, romantic or platonic, that will make you feel loved again.
  • Your friends and family are the loves of your life- surround yourself with those soulmates and you can survive anything at all.
  • You can and will have a full life without that person in it.
  • Sometimes someone else has to stop choosing you for you to start choosing yourself.
  • It‘s not your responsibility to fix someone who is broken. And if you still try to and it doesn‘t work, then you have to get out of there before it breaks you too. You can‘t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped.
  • I will always carry pieces of them- habits, tastes, expressions- and knowing that is bittersweet.
  • Sometimes it takes going through heartbreak to make you realise how strong you are. Heartbreak gives you clarity to see the things that made it not work out or made that person “wrong” for you once you have that post-heartbreak lens.
  • Heartbreak f****** hurts, emotionally AND physically. Instead of letting it turn me into a hateful person, it showed me how resilient and strong I really am. I developed a mindset of ‘everything happens for a reason’ (how cliché).
  • I learnt that you can really lose yourself in an unhealthy relationship- your confidence, self worth, and your moral compass. But when you get out of it, and get over the worst of the breakup, it will all come back and you can become the best version of yourself again.
  • Never try to fill the hole they left with someone else, you can’t fill that hole, that one will just hurt, but after you’re done with the ice cream and tears, put in the effort to find the parts of yourself and life that make you happy again, that’s the only way to help the world feel whole.
  • You cannot put your whole heart into a partner because they may not give you theirs. You deserve to keep your heart and to love yourself above anyone else.
  • The death of my mum taught me the capacity of a human heart and that sometimes when broken they never heal, you just learn to live with the cracks.
  • Firstly, you can’t decide who you love but you can decide who you want to spend the rest of your life with. Secondly, unless you truly love yourself no relationship will ever work.
  • My worst heartbreak taught me to save some of my soul for myself. You should never allow someone to have the entire percentage of you, otherwise they leave you with nothing if they go.
  • Never give up on your dreams for someone else. It’s important to always stay true to yourself and if someone is asking you to do something you absolutely don’t want to do, say ‘no’ and stay true to the ‘you’ that you know.
  • The only person who’s truly there for you is YOU.
  • Take time to yourself in the aftermath, learn who you are and what you want, as opposed to relying on a partner to make you feel like you matter.
  • It‘s okay if it takes you a ‘long’ time to heal from heartbreak, even though it feels like society gives you a certain time frame. It‘s also okay if you need less time than indicated. Heartbreak is neither linear nor universal. Stop telling people how long they are allowed to mourn what they lost.
  • When it feels like the rug has been pulled from underneath your feet, it has. But in time the dust will settle and you will get through this.
  • The “ride the wave” mantra has got me through A LOT.
  • Don’t settle for someone just because that person makes you feel safe. You are worth more!
  • If they want to be with you, they will make the effort. If they don’t, they won’t. Actions > words.
  • I learnt that you can’t put an expiry date on heartbreak, one day you’ll wake up and forget what you’ve been crying about for 2 years! My friends told me that it would take 6 months to get over it but placing a timeframe on it felt like I had a rulebook on healing that simply didn’t apply to me!
  • No matter how hard you try, you cannot force someone to stay in love with you.
  • Time is the best healer, as cliche as it sounds.
  • If you don’t like the person you’ve become, it’s time to walk away.
  • At the end of the day, no one is more important than you and your mental health.
  • Valuing being in a relationship more than others typically do doesn’t make you weak or needy, it means you are aware of your needs and will help you choose someone better suited to meet those in the future.
  • I personally think heartbreak can be useful, however painful it is at the time you learn some valuable lessons. Lessons in what you want and perhaps even more importantly what you don’t want in a partner. You can learn to value yourself and above all love yourself, and that you’re absolutely not half a person- because being yourself is enough.
  • Heartbreak has taught me that it’s okay to be by yourself. You don’t need to have another person to make you whole like books and films often tell you. In fact you can do that all on your own & learn so much about yourself just by embracing the moments when you’re alone. And if all else fails Taylor Swift’s Red album will have your back and guide you through it.
  • Once you’re out the other side, you’ll realise it’s scarier to live a life in which you are not truly valued or loved than to feel the temporary pain of a break-up. You deserve someone to meet you halfway with the same amount of love, compassion and respect you give them.
  •  Build a life in which someone will enhance it, not make it or break it.
  • I learnt to never, ever make myself smaller or less, and never to allow myself to be made to feel like my needs and wishes are “too much” (because really, there’s no such thing).
  • Find someone who loves you as much as you had to love yourself whilst mending your broken heart.
  • Even though it doesn’t seem like it, there’s a reason for everything.
  • Words are empty promises, pay attention to their actions.
  • It’s scary to open yourself up to someone and know they have the power to change it all, but the right person will handle your heart with care.
  • Having your own back is the most powerful thing you can do.
  • Trust your gut wholeheartedly. If something feels off it probably is.
  • I can give the love I gave to him to myself.
  • Nothing you try to do to make sense of it ever will. Stop trying to apply logic and work on moving on.
  • If you can feel so much love for the wrong person, imagine how much love you can feel for the right one.
  • The emotions you feel when you break up with someone are so complex. I learned that guilt, like worrying, is a pointless emotion – it eats you up inside and it won’t go away unless you literally stop letting yourself feel it. You have to remind yourself why you did what you did and that you did it for the right reason, as painful as it is.
  • Keep busy and don’t feel bad for relying on the people that love you and want to help you. Take up space, ask for help and don’t struggle through this alone- you might just find you feel more love than ever from the friends and family you know won’t ever abandon you.
  • Don’t stop listening to the albums you loved together or watching your favourite TV shows (if you can) because it will be a lot harder when they naturally appear in your life and you’re not prepared- push through and reclaim them.
  • Heartbreak taught me that the true loves of my life are my closest friends. They were there for me through everything, and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to thank them enough, from a ‘how are you doing today?’ text, to a gossip over coffee. My friends have actually shown me what real, unconditional love is, not him.
  • Sometimes the timing is right, it’s just the wrong person.
  • Fall in love with someone who doesn’t make you think love is hard.

Contactless Self-Pleasure – Meet the Clitoral Stimulator Everyone Wants to Tap!

The new clitoral stimulator is the ultimate sex toy for anyone looking to level up their solo play with a distinguished piece of DIY equipment, designed entirely for the clitoris.

Created in partnership with Womanizer

Welcome the Premium 2 to the stage, the flagship clitoral stimulator brought to you by Womanizer. Dubbed the “Prada” of sex toys, it’s premium by name, premium by nature, serving self-love in its most luxurious form yet.

If you’re someone who depends on clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm, then there’s no need to take the test, the Womanizer Premium 2 is your *official* Love Language. Your certificate is in the post.

The new clitoral stimulator is the ultimate sex toy for anyone looking to level up their solo play with a distinguished piece of DIY equipment, designed entirely for the clitoris. Sure, any old bullet vibrator can get the job done and dusted, but when 80% of vagina-having people need clitoral stimulation to climax, it’s high time the clitoris received the 5* head it deserves. Getting it done is the kind of toxic productivity we left in 2021.

2022 is the year of the guilt-free wank. We’re talking main character energy only. If there were a clitoral equivalent of the Bechdel test, this sex toy would pass it with flying orgasms, let’s put it that way.

With National Self Love Day fast approaching, we’re setting some healthy intentions, namely being caffeinated & freshly masturbated for the occasion, and what better way to commemorate this day than with a mind-blowing, clit-centric wank?

It’s our greatest pleasure to introduce the latest member of the Womanizer fam but before we skip to the exceedingly good part, let’s begin by covering the clitoral suction basics because we all know the curriculum won’t…

What is a ‘clitoral suction’ toy?

If you’re new to the orgasm-bending world of clitoral suction toys, then congratulations on your graduation, you won’t regret it. Prepare for everything you thought you knew about self-pleasure to be spun on its head – this journey is going to be a beautiful one.

Seven years ago, Womanizer revolutionized the sex toy industry by inventing the world’s first clit suction toy affectionately known as the clit sucker, designed to mimic oral sex and provide clitoral stimulation without direct contact. Contactless orgasms? Ariana was right – God is a Woman(izer).

Instead of the intense stimulation often associated with other sex toys in the category, clitoral suction works by creating airflow and pressure around the clitoris, encouraging blood flow to the area and heightening arousal.

We’ve spoken at length about the wonders of the clitoris here on Zoella before, after all, it is our pleasure capital with a truly expansive postcode. It’s the central navigation system upon which a hell of a lot of us rely for orgasms, so whenever a brand takes that responsibility seriously and fashions a toy out of it, a clitoris gets its wings.

The new Womanizer Premium 2 uses the world-famous (and first of its kind) Pleasure Air ™ Technology, offering concentrated, contactless stimulation unlike any other clit vibrator. Rather than overstimulating the clitoris and all 8,000 of its nerve endings, Pleasure Air Technology envelopes it with a happy hybrid of targeted suction and vibration sensations, sucking and massaging using pressure alone. If that sounds a lot like magic to you, that’s because it is. If anything, it’s slightly ironic that it’s shaped a bit like an inhaler because it will rob you of breath in the best possible way.

Clitoral stimulators, then, provide a gentler option for those with sensitive clitorises thanks to touchless stimulation, all the while letting you choose how intense that clit stim hits.

Let’s talk tech

How do I love thee? Let us count the ways. Herein lies several reasons why the Womanizer Premium 2 towers head and shoulders above the rest of the sex toys in your silky bedside bag of tricks.

Pleasure Air Technology – gentle yet powerful waves stimulate the clitoris, providing the perfect balance between pulsating and massaging. No more numbness or overstimulation.

Autopilot Mode – If your self-pleasure habits have become slightly boring and predictable of late (2020 has a lot to answer for), allow autopilot 2.0 to recalibrate your expectations. Pamper yourself rotten with the autopilot function and let the toy do all the work, gliding between the gears without moving a finger. Literally. Lazy wank, completed it.

Smart Silence Technology – the very best kind of silent treatment. The Premium 2 only starts up once it’s in contact with your skin, meaning uninterrupted orgasms and preserved battery life. Make way for the grand finale – just because the technology’s quiet, doesn’t mean you will be.

IPX7 Waterproof – Want to make a splash? We all know a good bathing ritual goes hand in hand with self-care, so what better way to elevate your bath or shower than with an erotically charged aqua aerobics sesh. Yep, the Womanizer Premium 2 is 100% waterproof. Good day, sir!

14 Intensity Levels – Forget Monica Geller’s iconic SEVEN, the Premium seriously raises the stakes. It boasts a grand total of 14 individually adjustable intensity levels from soft all the way up to seventh heaven, meaning your pleasure is entirely in your hands. Live out limitless fantasies!

240 Minutes of Run Time – with a tank like that, you’ll never be in danger of running low on juice just as you’re pulling into the masturbation station again.

Extra Stimulator Heads – because we all know one size doesn’t fit all, each box contains two different sizes of stimulator heads so you can tailor your pleasure to suit your body.

If your house was on fire, and your cat and your boyfriend had already reached a place of safety, this is the one object you’d grab, which we all know is the real measure of a good sex toy.

How to use a clitoral stimulator

For the uninitiated, here’s a step-by-step guide to using clitoral vibrators:

  1. Grab some lube – if oral sex is the centre of your universe, then go ham with the lube. The lubrication paired with the clitoral stimulation makes for one complementary pleasure pairing. No tongue, no problem.
  2. Find a comfortable position – whether that be lying flat on your bed, sprawled out in a yoga pose or in the bath.
  3. Spread the labia apart slightly to expose the clitoris. V for victory and all that.
  4.  Place the Womanizer Premium 2 against your skin. Have a play with the positioning. Everybody is different so take your time. Remember the aforementioned leisurely guilt-free wank.
  5. Explore all 14 intensity levels from soft to intense. Embrace experimentation and self-discovery.
  6. Don’t forget to have fun! Unsubscribe from shame and enjoy pleasure for what it is: the most natural thing on earth. If ever there were a self-love affirmation to tattoo on your brain, it’s that.

Treat yourself this Self Love Day and save 20% with the code ZOELLA20 on the Womanizer Premium 2 available at Lovehoney. Run, don’t walk!

Single or Taken, Here’s 20 Ways to Make It Through The Month of PDA Unscathed

As usual we’ve broken down 20 things we’ll be partaking in this month, most of which involve scoffing the discounted Hotel Chocolat gift selection post Feb 14th, and we truly wouldn’t have it any other way…

2022 is well underway and with January tucked under our belts and the month of love upon us it’s only looking up from here! With longer days, Galentines and a new Tom Holland release in cinemas it’s a great time to be alive, and we’ll be celebrating with a glass of Rosé to mark the occasion, thank you very much. It might be the shortest month of the year but with the promise of Spring somewhat on the horizon (wishful thinking) positivity is flowing through our veins here at Zoella HQ, and we have a feeling this month is gonna be a good’un! As usual we’ve broken down 20 things we’ll be partaking in this month, most of which involve scoffing the discounted Hotel Chocolat gift selection post Feb 14th, and we truly wouldn’t have it any other way…

  1. Add ‘January’s over’ to your gratitude list each morning.
  2. Eat your bodyweight in Valentine’s themed chocolates because self love is everything.
  3. Watch The Notebook and spend 2 days emotionally recovering.
  4. Listen to Taylor Swift’s Lover exclusively for a full 28 days straight.
  5. Repeatedly pin Timothée Chalamet to your Pinterest vision board because there’s still time to manifest a dreamboat into your life before the 14th, and why not aim high?
  6. Wonder how long it will be until bare leg weather comes around and immediately shiver.
  7. Consider booking a one way ticket somewhere with a decent chance of meeting the daily recommended Vit D intake because sometimes England just ain’t it.
  8. Spend obscene amounts on Val Day appropriate nail art just to feel something, complete with hearts, glitter, gems and a 10 minute long photoshoot at the end of it all.
  9. Redownload Hinge and delete it within 48 hours. Standard.
  10. Spend a considerable amount of the month commenting on how quickly it’s flown by in comparison to January.
  11. Wonder if it’s too late to action all the well-intended 2022 resolutions that have somehow fallen by the wayside.
  12. Write a love letter to yourself to open next Valentine’s Day and lap up the delicious feelings of knowing you are enough.
  13. Organise a boozy Galentine’s brunch with your fave ladies and get emotional after one too many glasses of fizz about how endlessly brilliant they are.
  14. Blast good 4 u every time you get the urge to stalk your ex’s Instagram and remember Ms Rodrigo taught us better than that.
  15. Spend a decent chunk of your long awaited January paycheck on some self love fun inspired by our very own Best Sex Toys for 2022 post and realise money truly can buy happiness.
  16.  Read Dolly Alderton’s Everything I know About Love and feel overly sentimental about loves lost and still to come.
  17. Add some of the Lush Valentine’s Collection to your shower and enjoy alone or with company. Ooh la la.
  18. Get excited for Pancake Day and then realise it falls in March this year. We hate to be the bearers of bad news.
  19. Deep dive into Bridgerton (again) ahead of its return in March and eagerly await your life changing for the better once more.
  20. Browse weekend trips to Paris because if you can’t spontaneously visit the most romantic city of them all in February then when can you?

From Dry Skin to Depression: The Truth about Taking Roaccutane for Acne

With so much to take into consideration, we spoke with Dermatologist and Head of Medical at Skin+Me Dr Jason Thomson to discuss the pros and cons of this so-called miracle worker.

You’ve likely heard of Roaccutane – the hotly debated miracle medication famed for its acne curing capabilities – but are the extensive physical, mental and emotional side effects associated with the drug worth the end result?

Oral Isotretinoin, often prescribed under the brand name Roaccutane / Rizuderm or Accutane if you’re in the US, is an anti-inflammatory agent derived from vitamin A, belonging to a group of treatments called retinoids. It works by reducing the amount of oil your sebaceous glands produce and killing acne-causing bacteria on the skin.

Due to its potency, Roaccutane is only prescribed in severe cases such as nodular or conglobate acne and where patients have not responded to other treatments, usually antibiotics and topical creams. The list of potential risks of taking Isotretinoin can be daunting but according to the NHS website, only 1 in 1,000 patients suffer from serious side effects. However, 1 in 10 people experience common side effects including dry skin, aches, pains and headaches.

Though serious side effects are rare, it’s important to be aware of them if you’re considering taking Roaccutane. The list of side effects include:

Common side effects

  • skin becoming more sensitive to sunlight
  • dry eyes
  • dry throat
  • dry nose and nosebleeds
  • headaches and general aches and pains

Serious side effects

  • anxiety, aggression and violence, changes in mood, or suicidal thoughts
  • severe pain in your stomach with or without diarrhoea, feeling or being sick (nausea or vomiting) – these can be signs of a serious problem called pancreatitis
  • bloody diarrhoea – this may be a sign of gastrointestinal bleeding
  • a serious skin rash that peels or has blisters – the skin rash may come with eye infections, ulcers, a fever, and headaches
  • difficulty moving your arms or legs, and painful, swollen or bruised areas of the body, or dark pee – these can be signs of muscle weakness
  • yellow skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow, difficulty peeing, or feeling very tired – these are signs of liver or kidney problems
  • a bad headache that doesn’t go away and makes you feel sick or be sick
  • sudden changes in eyesight, including not seeing as well at night

Understandably, getting your hands on the drug isn’t an easy process. In the UK, it can only be prescribed and supervised under the care of a consultant dermatologist and requires a psychological assessment, blood tests and regular pregnancy tests as it can cause serious harm to an unborn baby.

With so much to take into consideration, we spoke with Dermatologist and Head of Medical at Skin+Me Dr Jason Thomson to discuss the pros and cons of this so-called miracle worker, from risks to success rates and the skincare you need to have on standby…

What exactly is Roaccutane and why is it a controversial treatment?

Roaccutane is the brand name for an oral (taken by mouth) prescription medication called isotretinoin. It belongs to a family of drugs called retinoids which means they are all related to vitamin A. It is highly effective in treating acne and has been used by dermatologists for decades, usually to treat the more severe forms of acne.

This is a complex area and decades of research into this link have not proven that the medication causes depression or suicide and the relationship between them remains uncertain.Dr Jason Thomson

The main reason that there is controversy around Roaccutane is due to some of its potential side effects and a possible link between taking the medication and depression and suicidal feelings. However, this is a complex area and decades of research into this link have not proven that the medication causes depression or suicide and the relationship between them remains uncertain. It’s very difficult to prove such a link and many believe that it is the severe acne itself that is contributing to the psychological distress rather than the medication and we do know that having acne means you are more likely to suffer with psychological conditions such as depression and anxiety.

For anyone with depression, what would your advice be when considering Roaccutane?

Tell your dermatologist about this so they can properly evaluate whether or not you’ll be suitable for treatment. Having depression doesn’t mean you won’t be prescribed Roaccutane but it might mean you’ll be monitored more closely and sometimes a psychiatrist will be involved in your care too. If whilst on the medication you feel low or depressed, it’s important to get in touch with your dermatologist or GP as you may need to stop treatment. It’s always advisable to let your friends and family know that you’re on the medication so that they can keep a lookout for any changes in your mood or behaviour. Like any medication, deciding whether or not it is for you is about weighing up the risks and the benefits with your doctor and coming to a shared decision.

Is there a psychological evaluation beforehand?

Yes, before starting Roaccutane a thorough psychological history will be taken and a psychiatrist may be involved to do a psychological assessment. As a precaution, before starting Roaccutane, dermatologists will discuss this possible link with depression and will always check with a patient if they have low mood, any mental health conditions or a family history of mental health conditions.

During treatment patients are monitored for any signs of depression and are encouraged to ask family and friends to look out for any mood changes.Dr Jason Thomson

During treatment patients are monitored for any signs of depression and are encouraged to ask family and friends to look out for any mood changes. There are also reports of sexual side-effects including erectile dysfunction and decreased libido whilst taking Roaccutane and these should also be discussed with patients before starting the medication. This might all sound scary but it’s worth remembering that in the UK, Roaccutane is always prescribed under the supervision of a dermatologist and the vast majority of patients respond well to treatment with minimal side effects, the most common being dry skin and lips.

When would Roaccutane be prescribed and when wouldn’t it be deemed a suitable medication?

Roaccutane is normally prescribed in severe acne that is at risk of causing scarring or in people whose acne has failed to respond to other treatments such as prescription creams, gels and oral medications such as antibiotics. It’s never prescribed in people who are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive as it can harm an unborn or nursing baby. For this reason, people taking Roaccutane who can potentially fall pregnant need to be using effective contraception (ideally two, most commonly the pill and condoms) and require regular pregnancy testing throughout the treatment course.

How does it work to target acne specifically?

Roaccutane works by targeting the main factors that cause acne. It results in the shrinking of the skin’s oil glands (sebaceous glands) which reduces the amount of oil production and this also results in a reduction in the amount of the acne-associated bacteria Cutibacterium acnes. It also corrects the way your skin cells are shed, stopping pores from being blocked – another key cause of acne.

How long can you expect to see results?

Usually acne starts to improve after around 4 weeks of treatment and most people will be on the medication for between 4 and 7 months.

Is there anything you should avoid when taking Roaccutane?

Alcohol should also be avoided or kept to a minimum when on Roaccutane as the medication can put strain on your liver. Dr Jason Thomson

Your skin will be very dry so avoid applying anything to your skin that can be drying or irritating. This means just very basic skincare – moisturise regularly and avoid harsh cleansers, acids or any other active skincare such as retinol or vitamin C. Alcohol should also be avoided or kept to a minimum when on Roaccutane as the medication can put strain on your liver. The British Association of Dermatologists advise not to exceed the government guidelines (no more than 14 units per week).

Do you have any product recommendations that are safe to use alongside Roaccutane? What does an ideal skincare routine look like for someone with severe acne?

The key to your skincare routine when on Roaccutane is to moisturise and protect your skin as it will be very dry and you’ll be more sensitive to sunlight. Look for simple moisturisers that are non-comedogenic (do not block pores) and also use a lip balm regularly. I advise La Roche Posay’s Effaclar H moisturiser and Bioderma Sebium Hydra which have been developed specifically for acne patients on treatments such as Roaccutane.  Avoid any skincare that can be irritating and drying such as retinol, vitamin C, chemical peels or harsh cleansers or scrubs. Try to avoid strong sunlight when on Roaccutane and apply sunscreen regularly, I advise SPF50 with UVA protection.

This month, we’ll be discussing whether Paris really is always a good idea when it comes to upping sticks and moving there to study, meddling mother-in-laws who just love to shut down all your wedding ideas, dipping your pen in the company ink, premature proposals, and what to wear to a new job. Decisions, decisions.

Maddie’s Advice:

As Audrey Hepburn said, Paris is always a good idea.” Worst case scenario you’re living in a beautiful city, famous for romance, fashion and culture with some of the best food and wine in the world. You can feel lonely anywhere so if you’re not happy where you are then why not take the leap? At least when you do there will be irresistible croissant on every corner.

Danielle’s Advice:

Oof I’m a little worried you’re running away from your problems at Uni. If you’re already feeling lonely here I think it would even more lonely in a different country. I’d decide first whether Uni is for you (it’s certainly not for everyone) but I’d focus on building your confidence here whether working or at Uni. Paris will always be there, and you want to feel super confident when you eventually go!

Lareese’s Advice

Gaslighting much? I’d ask him for a catch-up, nip it in the bud and move on. If you’ve got to work with him for the foreseeable future you don’t want that gnarly energy hanging about. He’s the one in the position of power, don’t let him take advantage of you or make you feel like you’re imagining things. Bottom line. If you think it’s deep enough and he’s not exactly forthcoming, don’t hesitate to make HR aware of the situation.

Darcey’s Advice

If you are asking what you should do I’m slightly inclined to think you might be interested in him… If that’s the case I reckon just see what happens over the next few weeks. Maybe he hasn’t said anything because you haven’t. Definitely wouldn’t make it a physical relationship yet, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with seeing what could happen, even just start flirting a bit and gauge his reaction to see how he feels!

Charlotte’s Advice

I totally get why this would feel intense and overwhelming! Can you drop some hints that you’re not ready for this level of commitment before he pops the question? Or even an open conversation where you express your needs and that you’re 100% invested in the relationship but don’t feel like you need a ring on your finger to prove that. Often the secret to longevity in relationships is communication and honesty, so I don’t think you can go far wrong in expressing how you feel, with some added reassurance so your partner still feels seen and heard.

Maddie’s Advice

Wedding preparations can bring out the best and worst in people. The pressure of hosting and wanting everything to be just right can often cloud the real reason it’s all happening in the first place. Not to mention the politics that come when multiple parties chip in leading to a sense of ownership over the decisions. Now is not the time to burn bridges, be the cool, calm and collected bride no one expects you to be. They say there is a true art to “winning friends and influencing people” and now is the time to exercise it.

Danielle’s Advice

Now is a really good time to make sure your partner has your back. Whether MIL is chipping in or not, I would get your partner to have a word and say thanks for being involved, but you’re being a little negative. It’s not your day it’s ours, so back off, or we’ll stop including you in the planning!

Lareese’s Advice

I’d play it safe until you can read the room haha. Stick to the wardrobe classics you’ll get the wear out of both in the office and out. You can’t go far wrong with a blazer, tailored trousers / black jeans, a turtle neck and boots. Or if you do want something more trend-focused, go for leather trousers and loafers.

Charlotte’s Advice

It depends if you’re heading somewhere quite corporate or to an environment where things can be a little more fun, but I feel like making sure your personality is still shining through is the key to feel confident at work! Maybe add some colour to exude some confidence too…

Danielle’s Advice

When it comes to hyaluronic acid I don’t think you can go wrong with The Ordinary, the thing with skincare is being consistent so having something you can use every day and night without breaking the budget is best! This Lumene glow boost essence is also lovely for the days you want to feel a little boujie!

We *Reluctantly* Tried the 5am Club So You Don’t Have To

Just how transformative can this early-rising habit be for our physical, intellectual and emotional wellbeing? The Zoella team begrudgingly set about finding out.

The concept of the 5am Club is a simple one to get your head around. You rise at the ungodly hour of 5am whilst the rest of your household is sound asleep, all in the name of productivity and distraction-free self-development. During this time, you follow the 20/20/20 rule of twenty minutes exercise, twenty minutes planning or journaling and twenty minutes of study, supposedly setting you up for a smashing day ahead.

If that sounds a lot like violence to you, then we hear you. The very idea of getting up at the crack of dawn voluntarily for anything other than an airport Wetherspoons and a flight to Mykonos seems preposterous, alas a We Tried Getting Pissed at Gatwick probably wouldn’t take off.

One of the world’s top leadership experts Robin Sharma introduced the 5am Club concept over 20 years ago, based on a revolutionary morning routine that helped his clients maximise their productivity, activate their best health and bulletproof their serenity in this age of overwhelming complexity. After publishing his book in 2018, many people have pondered whether they too could elevate their lives and channel the success of world-famous entrepreneurs simply by rising with the rooster.

We get it, achieving your goals, prioritising YOU and forming healthier habits before the rest of the world is even out of bed is a sure-fire way to feel good about yourself, especially when you use that time to help causes like Move for Mind (Mind’s 30 day exercise and fundraising challenge).

But just how transformative can this early-rising habit be for our physical, intellectual and emotional wellbeing? The Zoella team begrudgingly set about finding out.

It seemed like a great idea in the summer of ‘21…

Lareese says…

Day one was a novelty. It had that early morning airport energy mixed with ‘Twas the night before Christmas solitude. I pottered about quietly bemused – and not so quietly smug – that I was awake before the rest of the world. The irony of course being that even if I wanted to stick something up on Instagram to say, ‘hey, look at me, look how carpe fucking diem I am’, no self-respecting person would be awake to congratulate me or call me a dick for showing off. Because they’d be in bed, in a warm pit of REM sleep and morning breath. As they should be.

So there I am in my sloth slippers, reading Wahala. It’s too early for coffee and if I put the big light on my elderly neighbour opposite will likely call 999.Lareese

So there I am in my sloth slippers, reading Wahala. It’s too early for coffee and if I put the big light on my elderly neighbour opposite will likely call 999. Lights don’t often get turned on in this house prior to 9am. I settle on candlelight and a bit of Dickens cosplay. The floor lamp goes on eventually because it’s still too dark to actually see my book. Well, this is nice. It’s quiet and I LOVE quiet. I’m constantly trying to seek out quiet but in Brighton, you’re never more than 6ft away from a screeching moped or a seagull.

After about an hour of reading, I find myself clock watching a little bit. I’m basically the opposite of a Sanderson sister waiting for the sun to rise so I can live and thrive like the involuntary early bird that I am rather than turn to dust on the sofa. At approximately 7.43am, I head out for a morning walk, Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place wedged between my ears. The weather is chef’s kiss which makes it hard to decipher whether it’s the buzz of the 5am Club or unprecedented January sunshine that’s responsible for making me walk like this: I appear to be bouncing on the balls of my feet and I say hello to strangers and mean it.

I’m back home for 9am having walked just shy of 8,000 steps and ready to thaw out in front of another candle. Dickens would never, not when they’re Diptyque.

Getting through the day is easier than I thought. I don’t begrudge the strangers dicking about in the sun so much because hahahah, been there done that at the crack of dawn lads. I predict I’ll feel absolutely crud around the 3pm mark but when it comes, it’s a bearable slump. An earlier bedtime would help, I think to myself. I’m a simp for my Bear/Wolf chronotype and if I’m to keep up this morning lark malarky (try saying that at 5am), then I need to stop fannying around on my phone and get to bed before midnight. I compromise with 11pm and wake up a little on the cranky side.

On day 2, I start the 5am club in much the same way as I did on Monday: Wahala, sloth slippers, blanket over the knees, only with significantly less festive spirit in my tank this time round. I fall back into one of those disgusting naps resembling a hangover and wake up thinking I’m late for my English language exam and I’ve forgotten to put knickers on. What have I become? The heating’s blaring, my tongue feels like I’ve made out with a moth, alas I’m awake for the second time at 5.45am. I think about ordering a McDonald’s breakfast but a) that’s not very Robin Sharma of me and b) lol. Of course it’s not open yet.

Once I get over myself, I recover fairly quickly with a pint of water, kill an hour by journaling and embark on the daily march before work. This time I’ve got happy hits between my ears and I’m charging towards the seaside like a blackbird towards a mealworm. I can confirm, Rusted Root Send Me On My Way always makes me overbearingly chipper.

I wonder when the novelty will wear off but annoyingly, it doesn’t. On the remaining days of the working week, I feel like I’ve found my way with this weird association – a gentle 20 minutes of Yoga with Adriene first thing, journaling, reading my book, and then off I go for the mad march before work. That, was my modus operandi.

And just like that, I stopped waking up at 5am…

Lareese

But I have carried on waking up earlier, just not 5am early.

I completely understand how claiming that ‘me time’ and showing that level of commitment to yourself would be transformative. I’m constantly starting the day in a chaotic funk, switching between emails, Whatsapp messages, DMs, voicemails and every other form of communication, and the 5am Club offers respite from that toxic rush. It’s a pretty magic time to be awake.

It was great to dip my toes into the club and I’m keen to reunite with the concept in Spring – someone mentioned it takes 66 days for your body to recalibrate which sounds about right. As for January, it’s hard enough to seize the day without getting up at an ungodly hour to be your best productive self so I’m officially freezing my membership for a few months. Come back to me in March when it’s light at 6am and Robin might have found a new recruit.

It’s worth saying you don’t need to follow the exact routine Sharma has laid out in his book to make the 5am Club work for you. After all, what good is a routine that makes you begrudge getting out of bed to do it? Very few people would want to jump out of the sack and straight on a treadmill, so my advice for anyone keen to join the club would be to ease yourself in with some journaling and meditating. Modify the 20/20/20 rule to work for you, and then do the exercise part when you’re actually present and awake. You’re running the club – you may as well make it a nice place to be!

If you’ve got a goal you’d like to achieve this year (learn a language, write that novel, become a yoga teacher, or fundraise for the Move for Mind campaign) but seemingly no spare time to do it, then the 5am Club is a great way to make sh*t happen!

Charlotte says…

So. In theory I love this idea. I (as well as probably every adult out there) always feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day to work, socialise, meal prep and relax at the end of it all, and so being able to carve out a couple of extra hours when the rest of the world is snoozing certainly sounds appealing. Before the pandemic I was very much a morning person but I have to say 5am is a bit of a stretch in terms of my normal wake-up comfort zone, and since 2020 I definitely find myself feeling more fatigued and in need of rest with so much going on in the world! As well as this mental fog, I’ve also had Covid twice in the past 6 months and my oh my I am always tired. Me of 2019 would have thrown myself into this challenge without a second thought, but I couldn’t help but feel a bit sceptical about how my already mentally and physically weary body (god I sound about 80 years old) would cope with this new way of living.

January has been spent entirely working from home, and I think not having anywhere to be or get ready for made it even harder to be motivated for a 5am start because it just didn’t feel all that necessary! Charlotte

I’m not gonna sugarcoat it, I lasted 3 days of the 5am club, and on one of those days I ended up back in bed at 7am to catch some more Zzz because I was falling asleep reading my book. January has been spent entirely working from home, and I think not having anywhere to be or get ready for made it even harder to be motivated for a 5am start because it just didn’t feel all that necessary! The snooze button became even more tempting, and I found I wasn’t exactly sure what to do with my extra time that wouldn’t involve waking up my other housemates too. Putting a wash on, doing a workout or cleaning all felt like I was at risk of annoying them, and the quieter, relaxing activities like reading or some morning yoga just made my body more tired. How can I do a morning meditation and not drift back off when my eyes are closed?! I sometimes struggle with switching off and getting to sleep in the evenings, but I think perhaps if I nailed down the fundamentals of when I get my sleep and altering my routine to accommodate this then a 5am start would feel like less of a killer. Unfortunately I found I wasn’t able to get into bed much earlier than for my normal 8am wake up call, and I definitely felt that 3 hour difference both mentally and physically.

I also think the 5am club doesn’t exactly best represent the realities of living with mental or physical health problems that mean rest is such a priority. I struggle with chronic pain and sleeping is such a respite for me, meaning I actually felt anxious about getting up earlier and potentially spending more time feeling unwell or drained. I find more than ever I am practicing lenience in listening to my body, and committing to a 5am start every day just didn’t fit in with this intuitive way of giving in to what my body needs. Perhaps it’s because I went in with a preconception that everyone getting up at 5am is fitting in 5k runs and working on their side hustles whilst drinking a green juice, but I definitely felt pressure to make this time productive and not just do sometime nice for myself. Old perfectionist habits die hard!

The winter months are definitely not my favourite either, and the dark, cold mornings are hard enough regardless of time for me! Giving the 5am club another bash in the height of summer certainly isn’t off the cards, when I know mentally I’ll be feeling brighter, and a 6am sea swim and smoothie before work does in fact sound great…

Overall I can totally see the benefits and appeal of these precious morning hours in maximising productivity and feeling like you have more time for the things you’re passionate about doing daily, but I’ll be honest, the time in my duvet cannot currently be beaten.

Charlotte

Darcey Says…

From the offset I was pretty convinced I would hate everything about getting up at 5am as a self-confessed night owl. So I set my alarm for 5am rather reluctantly but also intrigued to see how I would actually feel waking up at that sort of time. Luckily I own a Lumie alarm clock so I can be woken up to some sort of light, which I believe made a real difference. So I wake up at 5am (snooze till 5:30am whoops) and I actually feel quite energetic at this time? Weird. Not what I was expecting. I decided to loosely use the 20/20/20 rule and found I quickly got into a routine of doing 10 mins of journaling, 10 mins of meditation, 40 mins of reading and then a 40 min walk. Being able to read and go on a nice walk before work felt like a real novelty and I enjoyed the extra time this new sleep schedule gave me. First day I hit a slump around 2pm, but that was nothing that caffeine couldn’t fix, but I must admit I felt way more productive throughout the day.

I just don’t ever have the motivation that early on to sweat it out at the gym or at home, my peak gym time is around 6-7pm and even the 5am routine couldn’t change that.Darcey

The second day was pretty easy again too, this day I added a short 15 min yoga to my routine and enjoyed it, but yoga is about as far as I’ll go in terms of exercise in the morning. I just don’t ever have the motivation that early on to sweat it out at the gym or at home, my peak gym time is around 6-7pm and even the 5am routine couldn’t change that. I also thoroughly enjoyed getting washing on and hung before I started work, that felt like the epitome of productivity! Again I hit a slump at 2pm, but I always hit a slump at around 4pm when I was waking up at 8am, so really it’s no difference just slightly earlier. Coffee sorted that out again of course.

Getting to sleep earlier bizarrely wasn’t too difficult too, I usually go to sleep about midnight, so being asleep for 9-10pm was a big change for me but my body seemed to welcome it. The third day was the hardest and also when I realised that 5am was potentially too early for me. We start work at 9:30am and with no commute due to WFH, 4 and a half hours is a lot of time to fill. Because of this I started to get up at 6am instead, this still gave me enough time to do everything I wanted, it just meant I had to do it a bit quicker which was more than okay with me.

Day 4 and 5 didn’t feel like a chore, it felt like a natural routine for me being up at 6am, journaling and meditating, reading for a while and then going for a stroll. I actually quite enjoy being up when it’s dark out still too, something about it feels very peaceful, I think really it’s the same comfort I get from being up late too. I do however think as the mornings get lighter I will be able to use my time more wisely, having to wait until 7:30-8am to go for a walk now is quite annoying, but in all honesty it doesn’t feel safe as a woman to be out while it’s dark alone. This affects me a lot in the winter with my steps because once work has finished, it’s dark again and I then don’t feel safe walking on my own then too. But moving is so great for mental health and so getting those steps in before work feels really good. For anyone struggling with steps motivation too, the Move for Mind challenge is a great way to encourage yourself while fund-raising too!

Overall I really felt the benefits of waking up at 6am and this will definitely continue to be part of my routine, 5am was just slightly to early for me and my work schedule. I’ve just had bunion surgery (potentially an overshare) so my sleep pattern has been out of whack having a cast on my foot and being uncomfortable majority of the time, however once this cast if off 6am starts will resume.

If you are thinking of trying this out definitely go for it, this is something you can adjust to suit you as dreading waking up for a morning routine is no way to live, but you might be surprised how those extra few hours in the morning can benefit you and increase overall productivity.

Danielle says…

So I’ll let you know up top that I FAILED quite miserably at the 5am club. Quite frankly I have enough hours in the day to do what I’m productive enough to get done so an extra 2 hours of being awake in the pitch-black dark, tiptoeing around my house wasn’t particularly useful. However, I did have some positive learnings, so I’ll take you through my feeble attempt anyway!

On day one my alarm went off at 5am and it honestly felt like the MIDDLE of the night except I wasn’t going on holiday or doing anything remotely fun.Danielle

On day one my alarm went off at 5am and it honestly felt like the MIDDLE of the night except I wasn’t going on holiday or doing anything remotely fun. I opened my phone and finally got out of bed at 5:30, my body cannot wake up and get up immediately it physically won’t do it! I decided I’d use this time wisely and go to the gym where I attempted a gruelling “lower body blast” (please read: left me incapable of walking for the next two days). I then had a swim, came home and walked the dog and I STILL had ample time before I started work. I actually felt pretty normal for the rest of the day and didn’t feel a massive slump, nor was I out like a light by 8pm.

I realised on a trip to the loo in the night that the previous day’s workout had rendered me in a severe amount of pain and I realised I wouldn’t be getting to the gym the following morning! As my alarm went off at 5am I immediately stopped it and changed it to 6am without any kind of guilt or shame whatsoever. At six I woke up sat on my phone for a bit and eventually hobbled out of bed to do my morning routine. I walked the dog on a particularly long route and realised how nice it was to be out without any kind of morning time limit. When I got back I cleaned my kitchen and my office before starting work and once again I didn’t really have any kind of slump, in fact, the moments when I felt the most tired was ironically when my alarm would go off at 5am.

On day three after not getting the best night’s sleep when my alarm went off at 5am it was incredibly easy to make the decision that sleep was simply more important than ANYTHING I could of done this morning and it was on day 3 I realised that having a schedule and routine is great but sometimes you just have to listen to your body, which often requires rest.

Waking up at 6am means I never have to rush or panic about getting to my desk on time and I can do some of my boring adult chores meaning I get to enjoy my evenings a little more.Danielle

It took just 3 days for me to realise the 5am club would not be for me especially when I was working from home, but I have started getting up at 6am most days which feels a lot less abrasive despite it only being an hour later. Waking up at 6am means I never have to rush or panic about getting to my desk on time and I can do some of my boring adult chores meaning I get to enjoy my evenings a little more, I’ve always been more productive in the morning and now it finally feels like I’m taking advantage of that, I’ve cracked the code! I think if you’re struggling with time in the day and you’re a natural early riser you should give the ol’ 5am wake up a go, but maybe wait to start until the sun rises earlier to take the plunge!

10 of the Best Celebrity Booze Brands Worth Breaking Dry Jan For

From vodka to tequila, rosé to prosecco, there’s something for everyone when it comes to exploring this unique industry.

The celebrity alcohol industry has boomed over the past decade, with everyone from Dwayne Johnson to Kylie Minogue hustling to ensure their bottle is front and centre of supermarket aisles and bar displays everywhere. From vodka to tequila, rosé to prosecco, there’s something for everyone when it comes to exploring this unique industry and the varying levels of involvement stars have within the process of creating, bottling and promoting their chosen beverages.

So if you’re feeling like this month is lasting 10x longer than the whole of 2021 combined and you’d rather don some low rise jeans than complete Dry Jan, look no further than the below alcohol brands for your fix of relaxation in a bottle…

1. 818 Tequila- Kendall Jenner

Starting with arguably the most notable celebrity alcohol brand launch of the past decade, we have 818 Tequila from ultimate cool girl, Ms Kendall Jenner. Named after the zip code of her home in Calabasas, California, 818 was crafted for years before being released in 2021, and anonymously won major tasting competitions- including the World Tequila Awards and the Ultimate Spirits Challenge- for a variety of categories such as Best Reposado Tequila and Best Añejo Tequila. 818 is also home to the agaves grown for the tequila and production of the bottles it’s sold in, with “sustainability and transparency of our supply chain” being a core focus.

There will be no weird post-shot faces or rushing to suck on a lime with 818 on your bar cart, as the sweet agave flavours mingle with notes of vanilla and tropical fruits, finishing with hints of almonds, lime pie and toasted coconut for the perfect Friday night tipple. 818 agaves are left to mature for 7 years to reach peak maturity, before being cooked for 40 hours and finally crushed and their juices extracted using large stone Tahonas as part of a traditional technique.

At a cool £54.99 a 75cl bottle, it’s certainly not a budget beverage, but can you put a price on being the ultimate cool girl? We think not.

2. Della Vite Magnum Prosecco- Chloe, Poppy and Cara Delevingne

Celebrations in order? Inspired by the sisters’ love for socialising accompanied by a glass of bubbles, be it “sunshine brunches and long garden lunches to cocktail hours and festival days”, Prosecco is an integral part of their relationship, and thus Della Vite was born. Made in a solar-powered winery with 100% vegan processes, Della Vite uses “innovative methods and homemade natural ingredients to push the boundaries of winemaking”. The brand currently offers two Proseccos, the Superiore (rich and extra-dry ) and the Treviso (clean and bright with a mix of gooseberry and date notes), both capturing the feeling of sun drenched days and the warmth of good company.

4. Aviation American Gin- Ryan Reynolds

G&Ts all round? Originally founded by Christian Krogstad and Ryan Magarian in 2006, Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds became the brand’s co-owner after acquiring a stake of Davos Brands in 2018.  Despite then selling his stakes in the brand in 2020, Ryan will remain the public face of the brand for the next 10 years, which is just as well seeing as his famously dry humour has become synonymous with Aviation’s social media and tone of voice. Aviation American Gin offers a softer and smoother taste in comparison to London Gins which are typically sharper in comparison, and has been said to have been one reason for gin’s increase in popularity in the U.S. Its blend of botanicals- including cardamom, coriander, French lavender, anise seed, sarsaparilla, juniper, and two kinds of orange peel- creates a more subtle juniper flavour, making it perfect on the rocks or as part of a floral gin cocktail on a summer’s evening too.
